Artist Profile | Modern production dinnerware can be so slick, embodying supreme functionality and the perfect frame to show off your beautiful meal… but it always feels like something’s missing – free-will, history, and process. It doesn't have soul. Takeshi Omura’s Japanese pottery combines the best parts of modern design dinnerware with handmade ceramic process for a perfect balance of design and soul. Omura’s work relates to production-ware in its thinness, connecting it to slipcasing, its solid-coloured surface, and its considered arrangements. The richness appears in the throwing lines, the slight imperfections, and the matte and textured surfaces which are unconventional for produced dinnerware. All of these traits are contained beautifully within a Japanese pottery zen presentation that celebrates simplicity, negative space, and user experience. After graduating from the Arts & Sciences and Ceramics programs at Tajimi Technical High school, Takeshi Omura studied under well-known potter, Keisuke Iwata. In 2007, after several years of producing his work at “Studio MAVO” in Tajimi, Omura returned to Fukuoka where he set up his own studio. Omura has built a reputation for his pottery with a thin, metal-like quality and unique shapes, textures and colouration.
