Artist Profile_Sue ware with a powerful presence, and white porcelain that is small but heavy. By respecting the old-fashioned method of using local soil and baking it in an anagama and continuing to earnestly face the soil, it is possible to maximise the strength of the soil.” Yoshiyuki Shimizu was born in the Kumamoto Prefecture, which is located on Kyushu Island. At the age of 24 he started pottery at the Kyoto Prefectural University and then trained with Masami Maruta kilns, Masami is one of the most popular ceramists in Kuromuta, Saga. He started studying ceramics under Atsuya Hamada, the third son of Shoji Hamada who was appointed as a Living National Treasure in 1980. Shimizu then went on to open his own independent kiln and in 2008 built one in a hill behind his house while coexisting with nature in a lush green land with tea fields. He explores old ceramics with various approaches such as pottery fragments and reconstruct their charm from his own perspective. Currently, he is based in Minamiyamashiro Village, located in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture.
